Harmony Happy Hours open for area singers

Area women of all ages and singing levels are invited to "Harmony Happy Hour" guest nights May 2 and 9, sponsored by Piney Hills Harmony Chorus of Sweet Adelines.

"This is a chance to learn some new songs, visit our chorus and see what we're always raving about," Director Sheila Nugent said.

The chorus sings four-part harmony a cappella music, in modern barbershop style.

"I joined the chorus nine years ago," Nugent said, "and I wish I'd joined 19 years ago. Through this chorus and the international organization overall, I’ve formed amazing friendships with ladies of every age and walk of life. I wish everyone could experience this joy."

Participants don’t have to read music, although any musical experience is welcomed.

The Happy Hours will be from 6-8 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the Presbyterian Church of Ruston, 212 N. Bonner.

Piney Hills Harmony Chorus offers 3 events in April, May: open auditions, guest nights, vocal lessons

Ladies, do you love to sing?

Would you like to learn more about singing? Are you interested in spending time with other women of all ages so that you can laugh, learn new songs and just have time for yourself?

Then come join the fun with Piney Hills Harmony Chorus of Sweet Adelines International!
Piney Hills Harmony is sponsoring three educational events in April and May for singers of every ability level:

#1) April 20 - Open Auditions
Are you a singer who loves the stage? Would you like to be a member of an energetic, growing chorus?  Two auditions will be held for those who are interested in joining our chorus!

The chorus is holding Open Auditions for women ages 15 and up.  The auditions will be held on Saturday, April 20, from 1-3 p.m. For your convenience, the auditions will be held in two locations:

Presbyterian Church of Ruston
212 N. Bonner St.
Ruston, LA  71270
Contact:  Sheila Nugent, 318.237.3331
Forsythe Church of Christ
2101 Forsythe Ave.
Monroe, LA  71201
Contact:  Carol Ogle, 318.348.2291

Audition Process:
Please prepare a one-minute a cappella song (without accompaniment) to sing for our panel.  You will be given information about our chorus at that time.  You will be contacted within one-two days after the audition to be notified of the results of the audition.  If you pass your audition, you will come May 2 and May 9 to our Guest Nights to learn more about the chorus and to be voice-placed.

Barbershop music is much more than "just singing"... and it requires more theatrical performance than singing in a school or church choir. So the more artistry that you can put into your face and body movements, the better!

In barbershop, vibrato can interfere with the "lock and ring" of our barbershop chords and doesn't allow for overtones to be produced. For the most part, vibrato is a learned stylization that is great for solo singing but doesn't work in barbershop.  So if you can sing solid notes without a vibrato, that's a plus. If you're used to singing vibrato, we can train you to sing without one, so don't worry!

Don't be scared!  Remember, we WANT you to do well and become part of our chorus!
