Young ladies: Sign up for Rising Star vocal contest

Piney Hills Harmony chorus will sponsor its second annual Rising Star Contest -- in the style of "American Idol" -- for young women ages 13-18 in connection with its upcoming show, "Star Struck."

The singing competition will offer a chance not only to perform on the chorus's show Nov. 11, but also to earn monetary awards. The first-place winner will receive $250; second-place, $150; and third-place, $100. All finalists will receive gift certificates.

Application deadline is Monday, Sept. 25. Preliminary auditions, where the 10 finalists will be selected, are set for Saturday, Oct. 7. The audition fee is $20.

Tryouts will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Ruston, 212 N. Bonner; the chorus show will be held at the Dixie Theatre in downtown Ruston.

Piney Hills Harmony is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International.

Member of champion chorus, quartet coaches Piney Hills Harmony

Piney Hills Harmony had a great coaching day this past Saturday, Sept. 9. Gwen Smith, assistant director of the Rich-Tones chorus from Dallas (OK, Richardson), Texas, flew in for an all-day session. Gwen is also lead singer in the champion quartet Kismet. Both her chorus and her quartet will participate in the Sweet Adeline International competition next month in Las Vegas. The Rich-Tones have three international titles under their belts, but this competition will probably be the strongest and wildest yet!

The above pix are of:
*A portion of Piney Hills Harmony reacting to some of Gwen's insightful -- and often amusing -- comments and instruction.
* Gwen and PHH director Wanda McKaskle working the chorus together in front of the risers.

To the left:
* Gwen demonstrating how she will mimic the sound of a trumpet during their performance package at international competition. The "trumpet" solo will introduce one of the Rich-Tones' songs.

More upcoming PHH activities will be posted here in the days to come. A sampling: We are sponsoring our second annual Rising Star contest for young women during the next two months; PHH will sing on a men's barbershop show in Shreveport in October; and we will present our own show and the Rising Star finals in Ruston in November.

Stay tuned! And, ladies, if you missed our recent free vocal lessons, the door is still open for PHH membership. We welcome all voice ranges, but currently are especially interested in low-range voices.

Note: Most photos on this blog have been contributed by PHH ace photog Teresa H. Thank you, TH! I have another pic to post, but Blogger won't let me do it tonight. Sorry!

More 'Ready,Set, Grow' shots

OK, so I'm a thief! I stole these images that were recently posted to our chorus Web site. (Thanks, Sheila!) They show our just-completed "Ready, Set, Grow" vocal lessons in some different shots than already posted below.

On top: A group shot of the RSG participants on the risers with chorus members.
In middle: The basses just a-doin' their thang!
On bottom: As Sheila sez, the leads leading the way ....
